BEST BATTERY LIFE

Source : Express

This smartphone has "the best battery life" - but there's a catch

A new survey has revealed which smartphone is equipped with the best battery - but things may not all be quite as they seem.

The study tested a number of leading mobile devices around today, and found that the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge triumphed in tests against its rivals, including smartphones from Apple, HTC, Huawei and LG.

However the findings could be taken with a fairly hefty pinch of salt - as the tests were actually carried out by Samsung itself.

The study, uploaded to YouTube by Samsung Deutschland, found that the Galaxy S7 is able to keep going for 10 hours and 59 minutes, whilst the S7 edge lasted 10 hours 30 minutes.

This was far and away ahead of the rival devices, top of which was the iPhone 6S, which lasted 8 hours and 13 minutes, followed by the HTC 10 (8 hours exactly) and Sony’s Xperia X (7 hours 15 minutes).

Also included was the Huawei P9 (6 hours 51 minutes) and the LG G5 (6 hours 31 minutes), apparently showing that Samsung’s devices really do have the upper hand.

Samsung has yet to explain what exact rules governed the test, adding only that the devices were tested on “equal terms”. However it doesn’t show the exact setting of the devices, or how charged the devices were to begin with.

NEW CIRCULAR SMARTPHONE

Company designs circular phone for women - because they struggle with rectangles

A new startup is reinventing smartphone design, turning phones from rectangles to circles. The circular smartphone, called Cyrcle, is aimed at women, whose smaller pockets often can't accommodate large phablets.

The brightly-coloured rounded flip-phone is an aberration in a market of mostly rectangular devices, and is supposed to have a more "sensual" form, resembling a women's compact mirror.

The phone's shell has the unmistakably low-quality aesthetic of 3D-printed objects, and was introduced at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress in February.

The company behind the phone is called Dtoor - which stands for "Designing the opposite of rectangle" although the Cyrcle smartphone is currently their only proposed product. The founders Christina Cyr and Linda Inagawa are ex-Microsoft employees, who plan to crowdfund the 2G phone on Kickstarter this summer for $100 per device.

The phone itself is  made from the Seeed RePhone Kit, a DIY-style kit that comes with different modules for a phone. These modules include LED lights, a touch-sensitive screen, GPS and NFC - the chip that allows you to make contactless payments.

The makers seem to be serious about launching this specialist "feminine-forward" phone, despite its completely tone-deaf promotional material. For instance, they claim to be custom-building for women, because current phones make women look "unattractive", describing it as, "moms at a volleyball practice pecking like chickens into their mobile phones." The Cyrcle is pegged as a more discreet and lady-like way of communicating.

Although most modern smartphones follow the traditional touch-screen rectangle model, there are others who are trying to shake smartphone design up.

Last year, Californian startup Monohm showed a prototype circular device called the Runcible for those who are bored of the same designs across the industry, which is essentially a smart pocketwatch that can make and receive calls.
